All children face challenges as they grow up: developing healthy relationships with their parents and peers, transitioning to new schools, dealing with the changes of puberty. The Family Studies Lab is interested in understanding why some children progress through development with healthy emotional functioning, whereas others develop mental health problems such as depression.
The Family Studies Lab conducts research on a variety of topics to answer questions about children's emotional development (see Projects). Projects are conducted as part of a training program for graduate and undergraduate students at the University of Illinois. This research has been funded by a variety of sources, including the William T. Grant Foundation, the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development, and the Cattell Foundation.
